Dear Friends,

Please watch this timely video, "Vanishing Prayer", briefly documenting over a hundred years of human rights violations against the (Navajo) Dineh Nation of northern Arizona. Theirs is an appalling history of repression and abuse, the sacrifice of a people for the coal beneath their soil.

The U.S. Government threatens permanent relocation of the Dineh in February of 2000. The Dineh have no future on relocation land. The site is radioactive from a massive upstream uranium spill, which the government knew when they purchased it for Dineh relocation in 1980. 12,000 Dineh have been forcibly moved since then, and their children suffer birth defects. In addition, the native plants crucial for religious ceremonies and healing purposes do not grow there. To the Dineh, to relocate is to disappear.

In order to break the fierce independence of these people whose animals sustain them, the government (in defiance of appeals by human rights organizations) began impounding their livestock this February under the guise protecting the land from overgrazing. Two sisters well over 80 years old (one physically disabled), had their horses and donkeys confiscated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs while away at a community meeting. These animals were their only transportation and means of carrying water, firewood and tilling their small field. They now are utterly dependent on the few caravans of activist supporters who bring food and water to their dilapidated 10 by 12 foot mud shelter. They cannot afford the fee to get their animals back. This is but one example of the cold-blooded means of eradicating people for profits.

A United Nations delegate, Mr. Abdelfattah Amor, will present his report on the human rights violations against the Dineh in Geneva on April 12th of 1999. Herein the fate of these peoples may in large be determined. The United States government must be held accountable for its abuse of the original Americans. In spite of the brutality they've faced, the Dineh maintain their dignity and right to self-determination.

It is our hope, as distributors of this film and fundraisers for the Dineh as well as other indigenous groups, to distribute Vanishing Prayer to all delegates of the UN as well as educational institutions worldwide. Please consider joining in the effort to uphold cultural diversity on this planet. See the attached Wish List outlining our most urgent needs, including mailing costs. To preserve the HUMAN species, in its many varieties, is becoming one of the most pressing movements of our time.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,
Mary Altmann

P.S. Please contact Steve at the number above. We need your help.
