Dear Friends,

I got your e-mail address from a message sent to me by Jean Hudon. I usually do not use lists to send e-mail but thought that you might find the enclosed information of interest.

If you ever make it over to the Big Island of Hawai`i, give me a call. We live about three miles from Hawai`i Volcano National Park. Some great hiking trails.

Warmest aloha
Howard Shapiro

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CELEBRATE CARING FOR THE EARTH MONTH

Earth-Friendly Schools Hawai`i-International, a project of the Performing and Fine Artists for World Peace, is sponsoring its annual Caring for the Earth Month in April 1999.

This program highlights local and international projects and activities that promote respect for the earth, support for initiatives addressing sustainability and community service by youth. Since 1996, schools, organizations, businesses and government agencies from Hawai`i and internationally have participated in this program.

This year's theme "Living In Peace With The Earth" stresses the belief that true peace can only be attained when we are in harmony with the earth and her people.

Caring for the Earth Month is being presented this year in support of the Gandhi and King: A Season for Nonviolence. This international program honors the vision and work of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and all peacemakers from around the world.

Major projects being planned include the creation of International Peace Gardens and Earth Gardens 2000.

If you would like more information or are planning an event, please contact Howard Shapiro at (808) 985-8725 or by e-mail at artpeac@aloha.net.

International Peace Gardens
A Program of the Performing and Fine Artists for World Peace

The International Peace Gardens Program, which began on the island of Kaua`i in 1994, was created to not only beautify the environment, but to bring a sense of pride to communities across the United States and around the world. The program is seen as a vehicle to bring diverse ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic segments of our society together with a common goal, to better the quality of life in their community.

Much of what we feel about ourselves and how we look at the world around us is directly linked with our natural environment. As more and more of our forests, prairies, rivers and other open space are taken from us, our sense of well being and balance is lost.

Peace can only be attained if we are in harmony with our fellow human beings and with the earth. With the simple act of planting trees in our community, we have taken a step in the cause of peace.

We welcome your participation in the International Peace Gardens Program. We do stress that once you have made the commitment to create a peace garden, that you care for and nurture the trees and plants that you have placed in the Earth.

Please contact us for an International Peace Gardens Application Form.

January 18, 1999

Dear Friends,

In 1998 the 30th and 50th memorial anniversaries for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi were commemorated with the creation of A Season for Nonviolence. 64 days of gatherings and events supported this project on the local and international level.

Leaders of city and state government, members of Congress, educators, and many celebrity entertainers, authors, and musicians through their active participation helped to support and promote A Season for Nonviolence . Presentations, symposia on interfaith and inter-racial healing; workshops, children's theater, essay contests, artistic and cultural events were held in 115 cities in 40 states and 10 countries; with the participation of over 350 peace and religious organizations, businesses, and learning institutions.

I invite you to join with individuals, organizations, schools and places of worship from across the state of Hawai`i in commemorating not only the lives of Mohatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but the contribution of individuals who through their daily acts of compassion and courage strengthen the "aloha spirit" in our islands.

To learn more about the 1999 Gandhi and King: A Season for Nonviolence (January 30 - April 4, 1999) and to be be listed on the international calendar of events, please view the website at www.GandhiKing.com.

I'd appreciate it if you could share this information with others who might want to participate. Please forward information to me about events that you will be planning for A Season for Nonviolence. This will be included in our publicity and the calendar of events for Hawai`i. Information can be sent to:
